Pain and Stress

To all current and future patients of Dr. Fan. My name is Julie and this is my story.
I have two herniated discs in my lower back located between L4, L5 and S1. This has been a problem for me for almost 15 years. I had seen many doctors way back when and have had many different treatments including drug therapy and steroid injections. These different treatments would work for a short period of time and then back to the doctor I would go. Surgery, to me, has never been an option. I could not find one doctor to tell me that after going through surgery that it would in fact fix my problem, basically I wanted a 100% guarantee and no one was willing to give me that. I have lived with pain which has come and gone since then.
Recently that changed. On Friday, July 9, 2010 my back went out due to a series of events that had preceded it. The pain was so great that it would take my breath away and make me physically exhausted and nauseous. I couldn’t sit, I couldn’t stand, and I couldn’t lie down in any position comfortably. I called Dr. Fan’s office on the 10th after having countless people mention acupuncture and Dr. Fan’s name came up several times. I did some research and decided to give acupuncture a try. After speaking with Dr. Fan I agreed to let her start treatment that same day.
To date I have had 5 treatments in the last 8 days and am happy to report that I am pain free!!! I have been very pleased with the level of care and understanding from Dr. Fan and will continue to see her for treatment of other issues. I highly recommend her to everyone I see. My husband now is in her care as well for back related issues and have many friends that will be using her in the future.

Hives
Although I had already spent several thousand dollars for medical doctors and prescriptions, all I wanted was to get better so I decided to endure whatever the additional monetary cost there would be and hope for a way to end my months of misery. I looked on line and called Dr. Fan's office in a state of total hysteria and she made an appointment to see me within 30 minutes of my call. She took my history, examined me and did an Accupunture treatment. It was very relaxing, not painful or scary at all. My hives were gone by the next morning and they have not returned. I am so thankful to be itch and bump free - who would have thought it could be accomplished so quickly! I am a strong convert to this type of medicine and especially to Dr. Fan. Acupuncture is a gift, a wonderful blessing that many need to know about.

Nerve Pain
I have herniated discs in L5 and S1 causing a sciatic nerve pain down my left leg. I received (2) steroid treatments and physical therapy and it wasn't relieving the pain and my doctor suggested surgery. Matter of fact, the PT put me on crutches thinking it would take the pressure off my back but it caused atrophy in my left calf muscle. A friend of mine suggested acupuncture and I was very fortunate to find Dr. Yali Fan. Literally, I could not lay on my stomach because of my lower back pain. But after 3 treatments, I was able to lay on my stomach with no pain. I saw her 3 times a week and now it's once a week as herniated disc takes time to heal. I strongly recommend Dr. Fan. She is so easy to talk to, expert in her field, and very gentle with her treatment.

Headaches and Insomnia
Dr. Fan has helped me so much during my pregnancy. I had horrible headaches and insomnia -normal things during pregnancy- and with just ONE treatment I felt the results. After a few treatments not only is my pregnancy progressing wonderfully but my headaches are gone and I sleep like a baby! I have been seeing Dr. Fan for almost 3 months. She has solved many issues for me. Besides helping with both my migraines and insomnia, most importantly, she has relieved my pelvic pain. I can have a normal life again. Something I couldn't do before. My doctor was trying things such as implanting a muscle relaxer or implanting a nerve stimulator in my spine to relieve the pain. Ulcerative Colitis
I have been in treatment for ulcerative colitis for more than five years following the regimens of tradition western gastroenerology. The results have been more than disappointing. The medications are frightfully expensive yet produce only marginal results. They broought the bleeding under control, but little more than that. I continued to be plagued by chronic indigestion with alternating bouts of diarrhea and constipation with no relief in sight. De4sperate for change, I decided to give alternative mediicine a try. Cancer
Dr. Fan,
It has been a roller coaster ride the past two years since I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and its corresponding bone metastasis. During this time my body was starting to get tired from fighting the disease and the toxic medications. I was weak with no energy and the majority of the bones hurt. No matter what position I was in, sleeping, sitting or walking the pain was always there. Especially in the knees, where I had difficulty in standing and walking.
After only one session with Dr. Fan my knees, which were swollen, started to improve. My energy started to recover. For the first time in two years I started to feel better and knew I had made the right decision.
Now after only five sessions I feel renewed and with energy. The bone pain is gone. I sleep thru the nights and have no problems standing.

As a patient of yours for the past two months, I would like to thank you for helping me with the pain I have been experiencing since chemotherapy treatment for Breast Cancer left me with Fibromyalgia. I had been to numerous medical doctors for this pain, including a Rheumatologist; and, in spite of daily prescription drugs and many rounds of physical therapy, I was in constant pain all over my body, particularly in my neck, shoulders and back. Just moving from a sitting or lying position to standing position was very painful. I also was experiencing additional excruciating pain in several points of my body and horrendous sleep difficulty which, I was told, was typical with Fibromyalgia. I had not had a night’s sleep, unless drugged, in over two years!
After I had additional physical problems apparently caused by drug interaction or side effects of the many drugs I was taking for pain, stomach problems or sleep, I visited my Family Care Physician, Dr. Colin Chan, M.D. After reviewing everything, he asked me if I would be interested in “alternative” therapy, such as acupuncture for the pain. I had actually thought of it, but probably never would have had the courage to seek out a practitioner. But, since he had confidence in you and I trusted him, I made an appointment and started treatment. I received some immediate relief from pain following the first treatment of acupuncture and Chinese massage; and over the ensuing weeks received further, enormous relief. I would say that my pain has been reduced about 70%! I’m looking forward to feeling even better. My friends and family say I’m almost like my old self. I know that the depression I had sunk into because of the pain and inability to pursue my active life, has lifted considerably! Not to mention that I can sleep, every night, without any kind of aid—except a glass of milk! I wake up in the morning “bright-eyed and bushy tailed” (as my Mom used to say) without overwhelming pain and stiffness!

Crohn's Disease
I am 27 years old and was diagnosed with Advanced Crohns 3 years ago….before being diagnoised I dropped from 130 lbs. To 96 lbs. In 6 months! I suffered from numerous symptoms.
For 3 years I have been on many different medications and in and out of the hospital constantly. I have taken Prednisone 40 mg. (pill), Remicade (by 3 hr. IV), Humira (shot), Flagyl (pill), Cimzia (shot) and others I can’t recall. I have seen many doctors and hospitals. I have under gone many Colonoscopys, X-rays, MRIs, Blood transfusions, Iron infusions and other procedures. After 3 years I still had to make frequent visits to the hospital for a week or longer stay.
On March 8, 2010 I came into Dr. Fan’s office and got a free consultation. She made me feel really comfortable and showed me how acupuncture worked. I had my first session that day and since then I have stopped ALL medication except prednisone which I only take occasionally (10 mg.). I seldom have stomach pain and all my other symptoms have depreciated. My weight is at a steady 120, I sleep well, eat well, have no blood present in my stool and over all feel GREAT! Although my insurance covered all the treatments I had before Dr. Fan and not acupuncture, I would rather pay to be healthy than live and be sick!
I recommend this to anyone who has Crohns because I have NEVER gone this long without being admitted to the hospital or in major pain. Now I an live my life without having to worry about what my Crohns will not let me accomplish. I have goals that I can see now…becoming a wife, having a child and finishing school…this is all possible thanks to acupuncture. Thank you Dr. Fan.

Weight Loss
Dr. Fan,
My wife and I have tried several diets in the past. While we have experienced moderate success with them, we have never accomplished what happened when we participated in the cleansing diet.
We try to keep our weight under control by working out 40 minutes per day 4 times a week. But recently we have not been able to lose any weight. In March of 2009, we added the cleanse to our weekly routine and the results were amazing. My wife lot 8 lbs. And 2 inches off her waist. I lost 12 lbs. And 4 inches off my waist. My blood pressure also went from 155 over 90 to 137 over 87. Since we completed the diet, we have more energy and we continue to lose weight.
We have already set a date for our next cleanse in 90 days.

I had tried several ways to lose weight without success during a two-year period. A friend recommended me to see Dr. Fan. Dr. Fan uses the so-called "cleansing diet" to help lose weight. I am glad I gave it a try. It really worked. How nice when I see I lost 2 lbs in the morning after a nice sleep during the night! It was so easy. I lost 15 lbs. Bell's Palsy
After over two years of regular treatments with Dr. Fan I have had NO reoccurrences of the Bells Palsy. I had only minor reoccurrence of lip swelling one time after I visited a very cold northern climate a year and a half ago and was treated by Dr. Fan and cured quickly. Since that reoccurrence in 2006, I have no lip swelling experience to date. My furrowed and red tongue is almost normal. My weight has also dropped over 70 pounds since I began treatment. Dr. Fan’s advice regarding diet and exercise as well as ongoing use of herbs and acupuncture has helped me in my weight loss. I would say my health at this time is abundant and I have not had the flu or a cold in over 1.5 years as my health has improved. The few times I have felt on the verge of illness, Dr. Fan has treated it and stopped any further onset. The herbs prescribed for flu prevention have kept me influenza free in environments that everyone was sick (at the University).
I have given many people Dr. Fan’s number and many people in my family have reaped the benefits of her expertise. I feel Dr. Fan is a part of my family. She ALWAYS makes me welcome and her compassion and caring attitude is felt powerfully when you visit for a treatment no matter if it is for a maintenance visit or for an acute condition. As long as I live in Tampa Bay area I will visit Dr. Fan for all of my Traditional Chinese Medicine needs.

Sciatica with Plantar Fasciitis
Dr. Fan,
I am writing to thank you for everything you have done for me. When I first came to you, I had persistent sciatica with plantar fasciitis in the same leg…one of which called for rest and the other for exercises. This was truly a “lose-lose” situation for me, and had me in constant pain from either my back or my foot. After only 5 acupuncture treatments, I was totally pain-free with a spring in my step! I had followed the advice of traditional western doctors for months with no relief, and you fixed it all in under 10 days! If it hadn’t happened to me, I’m not sure I would have believed this was possible. After a few more general acupuncture sessions, people started commenting on how good I look and the glow I seem to have…and ever woman loves to hear that.
I am please to report that, with your help, I am finally ready to quit smoking forever. Stomach Pain

I have been seeing Dr. Fan for almost three years. I first came to her because I was having horrible stomach pain, which began when I was caring for my terminally ill mother. They were alleviated my first time on the table. I have been seeing her ever since.
I am convinced that Dr. Fan gently persuading me to take precaution before I needed it is part of the reason that my trip to Tanzania, Africa was the most wonderful, fabulous, best trip ever taken by anyone adventure of a lifetime.
Part of my preparation for a three week trip I was taking in late January to Tanzania, Africa, was making sure my immune system was geared up by seeing Dr. Fan immediately prior to my departure. She suggested several herbs that I should take with me “just in case”. I was allowed one 26” suitcase and a backpack by our outfitters because we would be moving to several different campgrounds. We also had to purchase Medi-Vac insurance because we would be deep in the bush if we got sick, it would be the only route for care. We would be brought back to the U.S. So, although I had limited space, I not only took those herbs with me but I also took her Golden Throat cough drops and the homeopathic nose spray for sinusitis.
When we got back to Arusha for our last night before flying out, one of the hotel employees remembered me from the first day. He asked me how I was and I said, “Great, I wish I could go out again.” He told me that most people return to the hotel from safari with colds or flu but he could tell that I was fine.
I can never thank her enough for the great care given me by her.
I will always remember my time in Africa.

Fibromyalgia

Hypothyroidism
I had been diagnosed with hypothyroidism about two years ago. Also, as far back as I can remember I have had severe problems with my menstrual cycle. When I first came to see Dr. Fan on recommendations of a good friend of mine, I was feeling very drained out with very low energy and insomnia. All the conventional medications had done me no good. Moreover, I had heard horror stories about the side effects of medications traditionally prescribed for conditions such as hypothyroidism.
After a few visits, I felt much better, my energy was back up, and I also slept well. With regular treatments for three months, my energy levels are much better and my thyroid tests are normal. I have regular menstrual cycles without multiple symptoms associated with the premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Since the past few months I have seen doctor Fan about once a month for health maintenance.
I have a six-year-old boy. Dr. Fan treated him for ear infections and fluid in his ears. She didn’t use any needles on him. She only used Chinese Pediatric Massage, which is called “Tuina”. It worked very well for him. He is a healthy boy now.
We admire Dr. Fan for her expertise and knowledge. We also thank her for her patience and kindness in listening to our problems and making treatment plans specific to our individual conditions. She really is one of the best in her field!

Infertility

Eczema
I suffer from a rare skin disorder and got tired of what seemed to be useless trips to my dermatologist. After much research I made the decision to try alternative medicine, namely accupuncture. I can honestly say that Dr. Fan does an awesome job. She makes me feel completely comfortable during my visits and she takes her time. She has done wonders for me in the 2 - 3 months that I've been her patient. I would honestly advise anyone to go see her if they're having issues. I have found myself telling my friends on numerous occasions, "I don't know what she's doing exactly but I'm so glad for it!" ACCUPUNCTURE WORKS. It may take time but it works. Dr.Fan is by far the best acupuncturist, or DR of any kind, that has ever treated me for an illness. I have been seeing Dr. Fan for at least once a month for the last 7 years for a rare and incurable syndrome. Western Medicine has no treatment . Dr. Fan has been successful in keeping the manifestations of this disease in remission. I have also had far fewer colds and flu's as well. She is kind, warm and a VERY EFFECTIVE TCM practioner. She has successfully treated my wife and other family members as well. She is the best.
